Tile Installation & Replacement in Greater Boston

Tile shows every shortcut. A poor substrate cracks the grout, a missed waterproofing layer rots the wall behind it, and a bad layout leaves ugly slivers at the edges. Done right, tile is the most durable, beautiful surface in the house.

Porcelain tile floor and wall with even grout lines in a Greater Boston bathroom

VB Construction installs and replaces tile across Greater Boston — floors, walls, showers, tub surrounds, and backsplashes. The finished look depends almost entirely on what is underneath: the right substrate for the location, waterproofing wherever water reaches, and movement detailing so the installation does not crack as the house moves.

Layout is the other half. We plan tile layout before we set a single piece, balancing the cuts so the eye lands on full tiles and the lines run true across the floor or up the wall. That planning is the difference between tile that looks designed and tile that looks like it was just stuck up.

Whether it is a new shower, a fresh backsplash, or replacing cracked and dated tile, we build the installation to last as long as the home — watertight where it needs to be, and true everywhere.

Waterproofing matters because the EPA ties mold growth directly to uncontrolled indoor moisture, and tile in a wet area is only as sound as the barrier behind it.

Tilework supports the full range of finishes we install, especially in kitchens and bathrooms.

Substrate, waterproofing, and movement

We set tile over the correct substrate for the job — cement board or an appropriate membrane, not drywall in wet areas — and we waterproof showers and wet walls before tiling. We also build in the movement joints that tile assemblies need, because a house expands, contracts, and settles, and rigid tile with nowhere to move is tile that cracks.

Questions

Tile Work FAQs

Why did my old tile or grout crack?

Usually because the substrate flexed, the installation lacked movement joints, or tile was set over an unsuitable surface. We correct the substrate and detailing when we re-tile so the new installation does not repeat the failure.

Can you re-tile just my shower or backsplash?

Yes. We handle focused tile projects — a shower, a tub surround, a backsplash, an entry floor — as well as tile within a full remodel. For showers, we rebuild the waterproofing behind the tile as part of the job.
